What should you know about hydrosalpinx in pregnancy?

A hydrosalpinx is a blocked fallopian tube containing fluid. Once a pregnancy is developing in the uterus, the tube is not where the pregnancy should grow, but pelvic pain or bleeding still needs assessment. Early symptoms can overlap with normal pregnancy changes, infection, miscarriage, or ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs outside the uterus and can become an emergency if the tube ruptures. A clinician may use pregnancy hormone testing, ultrasound, and repeated assessment to locate the pregnancy and check your wellbeing. A previous pelvic infection, including Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, may be relevant to the history.

Tell your maternity team about the hydrosalpinx as soon as pregnancy is confirmed, especially if the diagnosis was recent or the tube has caused pain. Keep scheduled scans and report changes rather than waiting for a routine appointment. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice. If pregnancy followed fertility treatment, tell the team which treatment was used; IVF may require an early location scan and an agreed follow-up plan. Surgery during pregnancy is considered only when the clinical situation warrants it, and any decision should account for pregnancy stage, symptoms, scan findings, and your overall health.

Go to urgent care for one-sided or severe pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, or pain with collapse. These signs can occur with an ectopic pregnancy or internal bleeding. Fever, chills, or worsening pain can indicate infection and also needs prompt review. If symptoms are mild but new, contact your maternity team the same day for advice.

Ask when your pregnancy should be seen on ultrasound, which symptoms require emergency care, and whether the tube needs monitoring. Discuss any previous infection or fertility treatment, medication safety, and who to contact outside clinic hours.
