What should you know about hydrosalpinx discharge color?

A hydrosalpinx is fluid trapped inside a fallopian tube, not usually fluid that drains directly through the vagina. Clear or white discharge can be normal, depending on the menstrual cycle. Yellow, green, grey, bloody, or foul-smelling discharge may reflect infection, irritation, a sexually transmitted infection, or another vaginal or cervical condition. These changes do not prove that the tube is affected. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease can damage the tubes and may occur with pelvic pain, fever, pain during sex, or unusual discharge, but symptoms overlap with other conditions.

Note the colour, smell, amount, texture, and when the change began. Tell the clinician about pelvic pain, bleeding between periods, pain when urinating, fever, a new sexual partner, or pregnancy possibility. Examination and swabs may look for infection; an ultrasound or other tubal test is used when hydrosalpinx is suspected. Avoid douching, which can irritate the vagina and make assessment harder. Treatment depends on the cause. If fertility is a concern, ask how the finding may affect plans for IVF or whether surgery such as Salpingectomy should be discussed.

Arrange prompt medical review for discharge with pelvic pain, fever, a strong unpleasant smell, or bleeding after sex. Seek urgent care for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, repeated vomiting, or feeling very unwell. If pregnancy is possible, pain or bleeding should be assessed promptly rather than judged by discharge colour.
