What should you know about hydrosalpinx diagnosis?

A hydrosalpinx forms when a fallopian tube becomes blocked and fluid collects inside it. Some people have pelvic discomfort or difficulty becoming pregnant, while others have no noticeable symptoms. An ultrasound may suggest the diagnosis by showing an elongated or folded fluid-filled structure near an ovary. A specialised scan that follows fluid through the uterus and tubes can assess whether a tube is open. Laparoscopy may be considered when imaging is unclear or another pelvic problem needs assessment. The result may also prompt discussion of previous pelvic infection, including Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.

Arrange a review with a gynaecologist or fertility specialist, taking the scan report and a list of symptoms. Ask whether one or both tubes are affected, whether the tube is open, and whether there are signs of active infection. Treatment depends on pain, infection, the tube’s appearance, and pregnancy plans. Options can include monitoring, treating an infection, surgery, or a fertility pathway such as IVF. A procedure called Salpingectomy removes a fallopian tube when that is appropriate; it does not remove the uterus.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, fainting, heavy vaginal bleeding, fever with pelvic pain, or vomiting that prevents fluids. If you are pregnant or could be pregnant, one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or bleeding needs prompt assessment because an ectopic pregnancy can be serious. New foul-smelling discharge or fever also warrants timely review for infection.
