Hydrogen Peroxide for Skin Tags: What to Know

Skin tags are soft, usually harmless growths that often sit where skin rubs against skin or clothing. Hydrogen peroxide is an antiseptic, not a treatment designed to detach a skin tag. Applying it may cause stinging, redness, blistering, a delayed-healing sore, or a dark or light mark. It may also make the area harder to assess if the growth is not actually a skin tag.

Do not cut, tie off, burn, or repeatedly treat the growth with household products. Arrange a skin examination if it is new, changing, bleeding, painful, or repeatedly caught on clothing. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and discuss options such as freezing, electrosurgery, or a small removal procedure. Keep the area clean, avoid friction, and do not pick at any scab after treatment.

Seek prompt medical advice for a growth that changes colour or shape, develops persistent bleeding, becomes painful without a clear injury, or fails to heal after irritation. Urgent care is appropriate for spreading redness, worsening swelling, pus, fever, or severe pain after applying peroxide or attempting removal.
