The short answer
Feeling hungry but losing your appetite can happen when your body needs food while illness, stomach irritation, stress, or altered taste makes eating difficult. It is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, and its meaning depends on duration, hydration, weight change, pain, and other symptoms.
Why this combination happens
COVID-19 and Influenza may reduce appetite during an infection. Gastritis, Gastroenteritis, or a Peptic Ulcer can make food feel unpleasant because of nausea, burning, cramps, or early fullness. Depression can change appetite and motivation. Less commonly, persistent appetite loss with jaundice, ongoing pain, or unexplained weight loss needs careful evaluation, including for pancreatic or liver problems.
Supporting food and fluids
Choose small meals or nourishing snacks at times when appetite is strongest. Soft foods, soups, yoghurt, or a familiar favourite may be easier than a full plate; avoid strong smells if they trigger nausea. Sip fluids regularly and consider a food-and-symptom diary. Review new medicines with a pharmacist, but do not stop prescribed treatment on your own.
When assessment matters
Arrange a medical review if appetite loss continues, causes noticeable weight loss, or makes it hard to maintain fluids and daily activities. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, confusion, fainting, yellow skin, or signs of dehydration. Mention pregnancy possibility and any history of diabetes or digestive disease.
What to ask
Ask which causes fit your symptoms, whether medicines or mood may be affecting appetite, and whether you need an examination or tests. Bring a list of food and fluid intake, weight changes, bowel symptoms, fever, and medicines.
