What should you know about humidity rash?

Heat and trapped sweat may cause small prickly bumps, while damp skin rubbing together can produce soreness in folds. A rash may instead reflect an allergic or irritant reaction to fabric, detergent, sunscreen, or a product used after sweating. Most people with heat rash notice itching or prickling, but the rash pattern does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Persistent scale, a ring-shaped border, crusting, or marked tenderness can point to another cause. Conditions such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, drug rash, intertrigo, psoriasis, ringworm, and scabies may need different care.

Move to a cooler setting, rinse sweat from the skin with lukewarm water, pat dry, and wear loose breathable clothing. Reduce friction in skin folds and change damp garments promptly. Avoid heavy fragrance, oily layers, and scratching, which can further irritate the surface.

If a new product or medicine preceded the rash, record the timing and seek professional advice before stopping a prescribed medicine. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose a suitable treatment after examining the rash, especially if it is spreading or recurring.

Get urgent help for facial or lip swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, rapidly spreading hives, blistering, or skin pain with fever. Arrange a medical review when the rash involves the eyes or genitals, develops pus, becomes increasingly painful, or does not improve after cooling and gentle skin care.
