Human bite treatment and rabies vaccine: urgent next steps

Care depends on whether the skin is broken, the depth and location of the injury, the time since the bite, your tetanus history, and the health and exposure history of the person who bit you. A clinician may clean the wound further, check tendons or joints, prescribe antibiotics, or arrange follow-up. Rabies vaccine is not automatically needed for every human bite. It is considered when the exposure assessment suggests a possible rabies risk, alongside any other recommended post-exposure measures. A wound can need treatment even when rabies is not suspected.

Rinse and wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water, remove nearby rings before swelling develops, and cover the area with a clean dressing. Do not stitch or tightly seal a deep bite yourself, and do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else's vaccine. Contact an urgent medical service and explain when and where the bite happened, whether saliva touched broken skin, and what is known about the person involved. If advised, follow the full Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis plan and keep every scheduled appointment.

Seek urgent care immediately for a deep wound, uncontrolled bleeding, injury to the face, hand or neck, reduced movement, numbness, or a bite near a joint. Rapidly increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain, pus, fever or red streaks may indicate infection. Emergency help is needed for collapse, confusion, breathing difficulty or severe swelling. Do not postpone assessment while waiting to learn whether the person who bit you develops symptoms.

Ask whether you need antibiotics or tetanus care, whether rabies vaccination is appropriate, how your previous vaccination history affects the plan, and which wound changes require immediate review.
