What should you know about huge stye on eye?

A stye forms when an eyelid gland near the lashes becomes inflamed. The area can be sore, red and swollen, with watering or crusting. When the surrounding lid becomes puffy, the swelling may look larger than the original lump and can partly cover the eye.

A large appearance does not establish the cause or severity. Persistent firmness, repeated episodes or swelling beyond the eyelid can point to a different problem that needs an examination.

Use a clean warm compress on the closed lid for several minutes at a time, as often as it remains comfortable. Keep hands and eyelids clean, avoid pressing the lump and stop contact lenses and eye cosmetics while the area is irritated. Wash pillowcases and towels regularly, and do not share them.

Book a GP Consultation if the swelling is substantial, interferes with daily activities or does not begin to settle. Take a clear description of when it started and whether it is changing.

Seek urgent care if vision becomes blurred or reduced, eye movement hurts, the eye is difficult to open, light is painful, fever develops or redness spreads onto the face. Marked Eye Discharge or a worsening Red Eye also warrants prompt assessment, especially with contact-lens use.

Ask whether the swelling is limited to the eyelid, whether the eye surface and vision are normal, and what treatment is appropriate. Ask what to do if the lump recurs and which symptoms should trigger same-day help.
