What should you know about a huge bump on the back of the neck?

It may involve skin, muscle, a lymph node, the thyroid or another tissue. Size alone cannot identify the cause, and a neck lump is not automatically cancer.

A clinician will ask when the bump appeared, whether it is changing, painful, movable or firm, and whether there was a recent infection, injury or skin change. They may examine the scalp, mouth, throat, neck and thyroid, then arrange imaging or a sample if the findings call for it.

A persistent or unexplained lump can sometimes be related to a swollen lymph node or a condition such as Lymphoma, Head and Neck Cancer, Thyroid Cancer or Cancer of Unknown Primary. These are possibilities to investigate, not conclusions from the lump alone.

Arrange an appointment and note the bump’s location, approximate size, texture, tenderness and changes over time. Photographing it beside a familiar object can help show growth, but do not squeeze, puncture or repeatedly press it. Tell the clinician about fever, night sweating, weight change, swallowing difficulty, voice change or dental and throat symptoms.

The assessment may include an ultrasound or other scan and, when appropriate, a needle or tissue sample. Treatment depends on the cause; Thyroid Removal Surgery is relevant only when a thyroid problem and a surgical indication are established.

Seek urgent care if the swelling is rapidly enlarging or causes trouble breathing, swallowing or speaking. Get immediate help for new weakness, severe neck pain after an injury, high fever with marked illness, or swelling with facial or tongue changes. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether cancer is suspected.
