What should you know about hrig rabies vaccine?

Pre-exposure vaccination may be discussed with people whose work, travel, or activities could bring them into contact with animals. Post-exposure vaccination is part of urgent prevention after a possible exposure. It does not replace washing the wound or obtaining prompt assessment. The number and timing of doses depend on previous vaccination, the type of contact, the animal, and clinical guidance. Protection is not immediate after a dose.

Before travel or a higher-risk activity, share your itinerary, planned activities, animal contact, and health history with a clinician. Keep a record of every dose. After a bite, scratch, or saliva contact, wash the area promptly and seek urgent care rather than arranging vaccination alone. Some exposures require rabies immunoglobulin as well as vaccine. Get urgent medical advice after any possible exposure, even if you had pre-exposure vaccination. Go to emergency care for a deep or heavily bleeding wound, contact involving the eyes or mouth, or symptoms such as confusion, difficulty swallowing, or weakness. Vaccine reactions such as soreness or a mild fever can occur; seek prompt advice for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash.

Ask which vaccine schedule applies, whether your previous doses change the plan, whether immunoglobulin is needed, and what to do if a dose is delayed. Mention immune-suppressing treatment, allergies, pregnancy, and the date and details of the contact.
