What should you know about HPV and pimples?

A pimple is a visible bump, not a diagnosis. Acne can produce blackheads, whiteheads and inflamed spots when pores and oil glands become blocked. Folliculitis involves inflammation around hair follicles and may follow shaving, friction, sweat or infection. Razor bumps can occur when shaved hairs curve back into the skin. Perioral dermatitis and rosacea can also create acne-like bumps, particularly around the mouth or across the central face. HPV more typically causes a wart-like growth with a different surface and pattern, but visual overlap means examination matters.

Use a gentle cleanser, avoid squeezing, and pause harsh scrubs or multiple new products. If shaving triggers bumps, reduce close shaving and use a clean razor with the direction of hair growth. Note where the spots occur, whether they itch or hurt, and whether they recur after hair removal or a product. A clinician can decide whether the pattern fits acne, hormonal acne, folliculitis, razor bumps or another condition, then choose targeted treatment. Do not apply wart medicines to facial pimples without advice.

Book an assessment when bumps persist, spread, scar, drain, form deep tender lumps or repeatedly return despite gentle care. Seek prompt help for rapidly spreading redness, fever, severe pain or swelling near the eye. A new rough growth, bleeding spot or lesion that does not behave like your other pimples also deserves examination.

Ask what features distinguish the bumps, whether a swab or other test is useful, and which products or shaving changes may help. Discuss hormonal triggers, scarring risk, signs of infection and whether LED light therapy is suitable after the diagnosis is clear.
