How to sleep with a sprained wrist

Short answer
To sleep with a sprained wrist, support the forearm on a pillow, keep the wrist neutral, and avoid lying on the injured side.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Position
- Keep the wrist neutral and the forearm supported.
- Pressure
- Avoid lying on the injured side or hand.
- Safety
- Remove a support if it causes tingling or colour change.
Why nights can be difficult
Swelling can feel more noticeable when the hand hangs down, and an awkward sleeping position may bend or compress the wrist. A sprain can make rolling over, pushing up from bed, or gripping bedding painful. Symptoms described as [Wrist Pain] can also have causes other than a sprain, particularly after a fall.
Prepare the wrist for bed
Place the forearm on one or two pillows so the hand is gently supported and not dangling. Keep the wrist in a comfortable, neutral line rather than curled under the palm. Sleep on your back or on the uninjured side, and keep the injured arm in front of you where you are less likely to lie on it. A clinician may suggest [Splinting] overnight; it should be comfortable, allow finger movement, and not cause tingling or colour change.
Use a wrapped cold pack before bed for a short period if it helps swelling, then remove it before sleeping. Do not take medication solely to stay asleep without checking that it suits you. Daytime movement and [Physiotherapy] advice can help reduce stiffness that makes night-time positioning harder.
When night pain needs attention
Arrange medical review if pain repeatedly wakes you, is worsening, or is accompanied by increasing swelling or loss of movement. Seek urgent care for numbness, a pale or blue hand, a cold hand, obvious deformity, or an open injury. A wrist that cannot bear light use after an injury may need assessment for a fracture or more serious ligament damage.
Questions for an appointment
Ask whether a night support is appropriate, how tightly it should fit, whether elevation is needed, and which pain-relief options are safe with your medicines and medical conditions.

Should I wear a wrist splint to sleep?
Some people benefit from one, but the type and fit should be recommended for the suspected injury and checked for circulation symptoms.
Why does my sprained wrist hurt more at night?
Reduced distraction, dependent swelling, and pressure from sleeping positions can make symptoms more noticeable overnight.
