How to get rid of BV smell

Bacterial vaginosis is an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina. It can cause a noticeable fishy odour, often with thin discharge that may look greyish or white. The smell may be stronger after sex or during a period. Odour alone cannot confirm BV because other vaginal infections and retained products can cause similar changes. A clinician may ask about discharge, itching, pain, bleeding, pregnancy, and sexual health before deciding whether an examination or swab is needed.

Book a medical appointment for diagnosis and treatment. If BV is confirmed, take the prescribed antibiotic exactly as directed and complete the course unless your clinician tells you otherwise. Wash the external vulval area gently with water or a mild unscented cleanser, then dry it carefully. Avoid douching, perfumed washes, deodorant sprays, and inserting home remedies, since these can irritate tissue and disturb the vaginal environment. Ask whether sexual partners or condom use need specific advice for your situation.

Seek prompt medical care for pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, pain when urinating, bleeding between periods or after sex, sores, or feeling unwell. Arrange assessment sooner if you are pregnant, recently gave birth, or symptoms returned after treatment. A smell that persists, changes, or comes with unusual discharge should be checked rather than repeatedly masked with scented products.
