Short answer

You cannot always prevent Braxton Hicks contractions, but resting, drinking fluids, changing position, and emptying your bladder may ease them.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Helpful measures
Rest, fluids, a position change, and an empty bladder may reduce symptoms.
Key warning
Regular or intensifying contractions need maternity advice.

What these contractions are

Braxton Hicks contractions are irregular tightenings of the womb that can happen during pregnancy. They may feel uncomfortable, but they often remain unpredictable and do not build steadily. Activity, dehydration, a full bladder, or sexual activity can make them more noticeable for some people. They differ from labour patterns, but the difference is not always clear from sensation alone.

Ways to settle the tightening

Pause strenuous activity and rest on your side. Sip water, use the toilet, and try a warm shower if this is comfortable for you. Notice whether the tightenings become less frequent after you change position. Keep track of when they start, how long they last, and whether they are becoming stronger. Do not take medicine to stop contractions unless a maternity clinician has prescribed it.

When to seek care

Contact your maternity unit promptly if tightenings become regular, painful, stronger, or closer together, or if they continue despite rest and fluids. Seek urgent advice for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, reduced fetal movement, fever, or pelvic pressure. Before term, these symptoms can need assessment for preterm labour; do not wait for them to become severe.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how your maternity unit wants you to time contractions, which symptoms require an immediate call, and whether your work, exercise, or fluid intake may be contributing. Ask what to do if you cannot tell practice contractions from labour.
