How Are Stretch Marks Different in Pregnancy?

Short answer

In pregnancy, stretch marks develop as the abdomen, breasts, hips, or thighs expand and hormonal changes alter the skin’s support fibres; they may start red or purple and gradually become lighter.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What pregnancy stretch marks mean

Stretch marks are lines or bands formed when deeper layers of skin stretch faster than the supporting tissue can adapt. During pregnancy they often appear on the abdomen, but breasts, sides, hips, buttocks, and thighs can also be involved. New marks may feel itchy or slightly raised.

Their colour varies with skin tone and stage. They can look pink, red, brown, purple, or darker than surrounding skin before becoming less noticeable. They are not a sign that you have done anything wrong, and their appearance does not reliably reflect the size or health of the pregnancy.

What to do

Moisturize itchy skin, use gentle fragrance-free products, and avoid vigorous rubbing. Keeping the skin comfortable can reduce irritation even though creams cannot reliably prevent every stretch mark. Wear soft, breathable clothing if friction makes the area uncomfortable.

Mention sudden or troubling changes at a routine pregnancy visit. After delivery, marks often soften naturally, and a dermatologist can discuss options if their colour or texture remains distressing. Delay prescription creams and procedures until a clinician confirms they are appropriate for your pregnancy or breastfeeding situation.

When to seek care

Ask for medical advice if itching is intense, widespread, or accompanied by a new rash, yellowing skin, dark urine, pale stools, or feeling unwell. Those symptoms can have causes other than ordinary stretch marks and need pregnancy-focused assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the marks look typical, which moisturizers are suitable, how to manage itching safely, and when a post-pregnancy treatment could be considered if the texture or colour continues to bother you.

Questions people ask

Can stretch marks be prevented during pregnancy?

No method can reliably prevent all stretch marks. Gentle skin care is useful for comfort, while genetics, skin stretching, and hormonal factors also influence them.

Do pregnancy stretch marks disappear after birth?

They often become paler and less noticeable with time, but some lines may remain visible or retain a different texture.
