Request written instructions covering activity limits, wound care, warning symptoms, follow-up timing and who to contact after you return. Do not book a return journey until the surgical team has discussed your mobility and fit-to-travel needs.

Keep discharge papers, implant details, medication names and contact numbers together. Follow the rehabilitation plan, avoid unapproved bending or lifting, and arrange help with meals and daily tasks while your movement is restricted.

Seek urgent medical care for new or worsening leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe difficulty walking, chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, or a wound that becomes increasingly red, swollen or draining. Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, uncontrolled pain, new numbness or a sudden change in the incision.

Ask: What will recovery look like during the journey home? Which activities and travel arrangements are restricted? Who will review the wound and imaging after I leave? What records should I take to my local doctor? Which symptoms mean I should use emergency services rather than wait for a remote appointment?
