How is rotavirus infection different in infants?

An infant may have repeated watery stools, vomiting, fever, tummy discomfort and reduced interest in feeds. Fluid loss can show as fewer wet nappies, a dry mouth, fewer tears, sunken eyes or a soft spot that looks more sunken than usual. Babies may become unusually sleepy or irritable. The number and frequency of stools matter less than the baby's hydration, alertness and ability to keep fluids down.

Continue breastfeeds or formula feeds if the baby can manage them, offering smaller amounts more often. A clinician may recommend an oral rehydration solution and explain how to give it. Do not dilute formula, give anti-diarrhoeal medicines or substitute juice without advice. Wash hands carefully after nappy changes and clean shared surfaces, because the virus spreads easily through contaminated hands and objects.

Contact a clinician promptly if vomiting prevents feeds, diarrhoea continues, wet nappies decrease, or the baby is becoming weak, unusually sleepy or hard to settle. Seek urgent help for blood in the stool, severe tummy swelling, green vomit, difficulty waking, signs of significant dehydration or inability to keep any fluid down.
