How quickly does nebuliser treatment relieve wheezing?

A nebuliser changes liquid medicine into a mist that you breathe through a mask or mouthpiece. A bronchodilator can relax tightened airway muscles, while other medicines work by reducing airway inflammation. Relief may be limited when wheezing is caused by infection, an allergic reaction, mucus, or another problem that needs different care. Feeling better does not always mean the underlying cause has settled.

Sit upright, keep the mask or mouthpiece fitted as instructed, and breathe calmly through the mist. Use only the medicine and amount prescribed for you. Do not share equipment or add medicines without clinical advice. If symptoms return soon after treatment, record when they returned and contact the treating clinician rather than repeatedly using extra doses.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, chest pain, confusion, fainting, or swelling of the face or throat. Wheezing after a possible serious allergic reaction needs emergency assessment. If the nebuliser gives little or no relief, follow your emergency plan or seek immediate care.
