How quickly does inhaler therapy relieve shortness of breath?

Breathlessness may result from asthma, chronic lung disease, infection, heart problems, anaemia, anxiety or another condition. An inhaler cannot be expected to relieve every cause. Quick-relief medicines relax airway muscle, but the response can be limited if the episode is severe or the medicine is unsuitable. Preventer treatment is intended to lower future symptoms and needs a routine schedule; it should not replace urgent care during a serious attack.

Keep your prescribed reliever available, sit upright, breathe slowly, and follow your written action plan. Ask a pharmacist to watch your inhaler technique, since poor coordination can leave medicine in the mouth instead of the lungs. A spacer may help with some metered-dose inhalers.
