How quickly does emollient therapy relieve cracked skin?

Cracking occurs when the skin barrier becomes too dry or inflamed to flex normally. An emollient softens the surrounding surface and limits further water loss, but it does not instantly close a fissure. Hands, feet, and areas exposed to repeated washing or friction may heal more slowly because movement keeps reopening the split. Persistent cracking can also reflect eczema, psoriasis, irritant exposure, or infection.

Use a thick, fragrance-free cream or ointment after washing and whenever the area feels dry. Keep water lukewarm, pat rather than scrub, and protect hands from detergents with suitable gloves.
