Thrush commonly causes a thick, white discharge, along with itching, soreness, or irritation around the vagina. As the antifungal works, itching and soreness may ease before the discharge has completely settled. A vaginal pessary can also leave a temporary residue, so discharge shortly after inserting it may be medicine rather than ongoing infection.

Discharge that is strongly unpleasant-smelling, green or yellow, frothy, or accompanied by pelvic pain may have another cause. Antifungal treatment will not treat every type of vaginal infection, and symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the cause.

Use the treatment exactly as directed and complete the recommended course, even if the discharge improves early. Keep the area gently clean and dry; avoid perfumed washes, vaginal deodorants, and douching because they can worsen irritation. Loose, breathable underwear may feel more comfortable. Check the product instructions about sex, condoms, and diaphragms, because some vaginal creams or pessaries can affect barrier contraception.
