A raised temperature is part of the immune response to infection. It may come with chills, sweating, tiredness, headache, cough or body aches. Temperature can rise and fall during the day, so one reading does not describe the whole illness. Symptoms that improve and then clearly worsen deserve attention, especially if fever returns after a period without it.

Rest, drink regularly, and choose light clothing and a comfortable room temperature. Check your temperature when you feel hot or shivery and record the reading alongside other symptoms. Use paracetamol only as directed on the label or by a clinician, and check before using it if you have liver disease or take other medicines. Stay home while unwell and follow current local infection-control advice.

Seek urgent help for difficult breathing, chest pressure, new confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, or an inability to stay awake. Contact a clinician if fever is persistent, repeatedly returns, you cannot keep fluids down, or you are becoming markedly weaker. People who are pregnant, older, immunocompromised, or living with significant long-term illness may need earlier advice.
