How is mammogram different in women?

The radiographer compresses each breast briefly between plates to produce clear images. Breast size, shape, tenderness, and mobility can affect positioning, while implants or previous operations may require extra views. A screening mammogram is planned for people without a current concerning symptom; a diagnostic assessment may use additional images when a lump, discharge, skin change, or other finding needs clarification.

Tell the imaging team about pregnancy, breastfeeding, implants, hormone treatment, and earlier breast procedures. This helps them choose suitable positioning and interpret the images alongside your history.

Book the examination according to the plan given by your clinician, and mention any breast tenderness when arranging it. Wear clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up. Avoid deodorant, talcum powder, or lotion on the breasts and underarms that day, as residue can show on images. Tell the radiographer if compression is too uncomfortable; a brief adjustment may help.

Arrange clinical assessment promptly for a new lump, bloody or clear nipple discharge, nipple inversion, a persistent skin or shape change, or a sore area that does not settle. These findings do not by themselves establish cancer, but they should be assessed rather than left until a future screening appointment. Seek urgent advice for severe breast pain with fever, spreading redness, or feeling faint or very unwell.

Ask which type of mammogram is planned, whether your symptoms require diagnostic imaging, how implants or surgery will affect views, and when results will be discussed. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask whether another test or a different timing is more suitable.
