How is mammogram different for women who prefer a female clinician?

A trained radiographer positions your breast between two plates so the X-ray images are clear. The compression lasts briefly and may feel tight or uncomfortable. Choosing a female radiographer does not change the images, compression, radiation procedure, or how a radiologist reviews the results. The available team may depend on the clinic's staffing, so a request is best made when booking.

You can also ask about privacy during changing, who will be present in the room, and whether a chaperone is available. Tell the team if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have breast implants, or have a tender area, because this information can affect preparation and positioning.

When scheduling, say clearly that you prefer a female clinician for the mammogram and ask the clinic to record the preference. Wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove clothing from the waist up, and avoid deodorant or powder on the breasts and underarms on the day because some products can appear on an image. Bring previous imaging details if the clinic requests them.
