How long should you wear a mask after COVID?

How the structures involved in Long COVID differ from normal

Short answer

Wear a well-fitting mask while you are still symptomatic or following current local advice, especially around vulnerable people; continue precautions until you are clearly improving and fever-free.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Best approach
Use a well-fitting mask and improve ventilation while symptomatic.
Around vulnerable people
Keep masking and reduce close indoor contact when possible.

What affects the decision

Masking reduces the chance of passing respiratory droplets and aerosols to people nearby, but no single sign proves that transmission has ended. Risk is higher in crowded, poorly ventilated indoor spaces and around people who may become seriously ill. A lingering cough can remain after infection, while fatigue or loss of smell can continue without meaning that you are infectious. Follow workplace, healthcare and local public-health instructions when they are stricter.

Using a mask well

Choose a comfortable mask that seals around the nose, cheeks and chin, and replace it when damp, dirty or damaged. Improve ventilation, avoid close indoor contact while unwell and cover coughs. If you must meet someone vulnerable, mask and shorten the visit. Wash hands before touching the mask, handle it by the straps and avoid repeatedly adjusting the front. Return to activities gradually if fatigue is still limiting you.

When medical care is needed

Arrange medical advice if fever returns, symptoms worsen after improvement, or breathing becomes harder. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, new confusion, blue or grey lips or inability to stay awake. A clinician can help distinguish ongoing COVID-19 symptoms from complications or Long COVID.

What to ask

Ask when you can safely stop masking in your setting, whether you need extra precautions around a high-risk household member, and what to do if symptoms fluctuate. Mention any persistent cough, fatigue or low mood.

Questions people ask

Should I mask if only a cough remains?

A cough can linger, but masking while symptoms continue is a cautious way to reduce possible spread, particularly near vulnerable people.

Does a mask replace staying home when sick?

No. Stay away from others when acutely unwell and use masking when contact cannot be avoided.
