How long does upper endoscopy take to work for Barrett's oesophagus?

An upper endoscopy lets the clinician view the lining of the oesophagus and, when appropriate, take small biopsy samples. The camera examination is immediate, but a biopsy needs laboratory assessment before the cells can be described fully. The result may help distinguish changes related to Barrett's oesophagus from dysplasia or cancer and helps determine the next step.

Endoscopy can sometimes include treatment during the same session, but this depends on what is found, the planned procedure and your clinical situation. A mild sore throat, bloating or drowsiness can occur after sedation and should improve as the effects wear off.

Follow the fasting instructions exactly and arrange an adult to accompany you if sedation is planned. Take only the medicines your endoscopy team has approved for the appointment, especially if you use medicines that affect bleeding or blood sugar. Afterward, follow eating, drinking and activity advice, and keep the appointment where the findings and biopsy plan will be explained.

Do not use immediate symptoms after endoscopy to decide whether the oesophageal changes have improved. The examination and laboratory report answer different questions, and your clinician may recommend surveillance, medicine or another procedure based on both.

Contact the endoscopy service urgently for severe or worsening chest or abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, fever, trouble swallowing or breathing, or dizziness that does not settle. These symptoms need assessment because, although uncommon, they can signal a complication after the procedure.

Ask: What did you see in the oesophagus? Were biopsies taken? When and how will I receive the pathology result? Do I need medicine, surveillance or another procedure? When may I eat normally and restart my regular medicines?
