How long does a travel health consultation take to work for traveller's diarrhoea?

The clinician reviews your destination, activities, food and water access, medical conditions and medicines. You can discuss hand hygiene, safer food and drinks, oral rehydration supplies and what to do if diarrhoea starts. Advice can reduce avoidable exposure and help you respond early, but it cannot predict the cause or guarantee that illness will be avoided.

Most short episodes are managed with fluids and rest, yet treatment depends on symptoms, examination and travel details. Antibiotics are not suitable for every episode and should not be started without medical advice. Children, older adults, pregnant people and those with long-term illness may need a more personalised plan.

Ask about a suitable rehydration solution and carry it according to travel rules. Choose sealed or treated water, eat food that is thoroughly cooked and served hot, and wash hands before eating. If diarrhoea develops, take frequent sips of fluid and follow the plan provided. Record when it began, how often it occurs, fever, blood, vomiting and recent foods so a clinician can assess you clearly.

Seek prompt medical care for blood in stool, high fever, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, faintness, very little urine or signs of dehydration. Get advice if symptoms continue, worsen or affect a child, pregnant person or someone with a significant medical condition. Do not use anti-diarrhoeal medicine to mask severe symptoms without guidance.
