How long does transvaginal ultrasound take to work for womb cancer?

A covered ultrasound probe is placed gently inside the vagina to produce views of the womb lining, uterus, and nearby structures. The scan can show the thickness and appearance of the lining, a mass, or another reason for bleeding. It does not remove a tumour or treat cancer. The sonographer or radiologist interprets the images, then your clinician combines the result with your symptoms and examination.

An ultrasound cannot by itself confirm every cause of abnormal bleeding. Your team may recommend an endometrial biopsy, hysteroscopy, or another scan if the images need clarification. Tissue testing is what can identify cancer cells and guide treatment planning.

Follow the appointment instructions and tell the team about pregnancy possibility, pelvic pain, bleeding, or difficulty with internal examinations. Wear clothing that allows easy access and ask for an explanation before the probe is inserted. Afterward, keep the follow-up appointment even if the scan feels reassuring, because the result may need to be matched with bleeding history or tissue findings.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy vaginal bleeding, fainting, severe pelvic pain, fever, or new weakness. Contact your clinician if bleeding continues or returns after the scan, or if you develop unusual discharge or worsening pain. The urgency is determined by symptoms, not by how quickly an imaging report is issued.

Ask when the report will be reviewed, what the womb lining looked like, whether a biopsy is needed, and how results will be communicated. Ask what bleeding or pain should prompt urgent help and whether any further imaging or treatment is planned.
