Take short, regular walks within the limits given by your team and avoid lifting, bending or twisting beyond those limits. Follow wound and medication instructions, use support when needed, and attend reviews or scans. Increase distance and exercises gradually rather than comparing one day with the next.

Report persistent leg weakness, increasing walking difficulty or new balance problems. A physiotherapist can adapt exercises to improve gait, leg strength and trunk control while the fusion heals.

Seek urgent medical help for new bladder or bowel difficulty, numbness in the saddle region, rapidly worsening leg weakness, severe chest pain or breathlessness. Contact the surgical team for fever, wound leakage, spreading redness, severe escalating pain or a new neurological change after an injury.

Ask whether decompression was also performed, which symptom should improve first, how to measure walking progress, and which restrictions apply to work, driving and exercise. Ask what neurological changes require same-day assessment.
