How long does sentinel lymph node biopsy take to work for melanoma?

The surgeon removes the first lymph node or nodes most likely to receive drainage from the melanoma area. A pathologist examines the tissue for melanoma cells. This test does not treat the melanoma itself; it helps the care team understand whether cells have travelled beyond the original skin site and discuss the next step.

The timing of the result depends on the laboratory process and whether additional examination is needed. Your surgeon or oncology team will explain the result and how it fits with the examination of the original melanoma and any imaging or other tests.

Follow instructions about fasting, medicines, wound care, and activity. Keep the biopsy and melanoma-surgery sites clean and dry as directed, and attend the appointment arranged to discuss the pathology. Do not judge the staging result from bruising, soreness, or swelling around the wound.

Contact the surgical team if the wound becomes increasingly red, hot, painful, or swollen, if drainage develops, or if the edges separate. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe allergic symptoms, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly worsening general condition.
