How long does radiotherapy take to work for lung cancer?

The treatment schedule depends on the aim of radiotherapy, the tumour's location and size, your general health, and whether other treatment is planned. Some people receive a short course to ease symptoms such as pain, cough, or breathlessness; others have a longer planned course intended to control a defined area. A symptom may improve during treatment or after it finishes, but radiation effects can continue for a while. The treated area can also look temporarily different on imaging because inflammation may accompany healing. Your oncology team compares symptoms, examination findings, and follow-up scans rather than relying on one early change.

Attend each appointment and tell the team whether cough, chest discomfort, swallowing, fatigue, or breathing has changed. Keep medicines available as prescribed and follow advice about skin care, rest, fluids, and eating. Do not stop a prescribed medicine because a symptom improves. Contact your treatment team promptly for worsening breathlessness, new chest pain, coughing blood, fever, repeated vomiting, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, or blue-grey lips. These symptoms need assessment even if radiotherapy was completed recently, because they can have causes other than treatment response.

Ask what radiotherapy is intended to achieve, when symptom changes might reasonably be noticed, which scan or examination will assess the result, and whether treatment side effects can briefly mimic worsening disease.
