Barrett's oesophagus affects the lining of the lower food pipe and can require ongoing review after treatment. Follow-up may involve discussion of swallowing symptoms, medicines, endoscopy and tissue samples. The clinician compares findings with earlier examinations to see whether the lining is healing, stable or showing a change that needs attention.

The benefit comes from repeated, planned assessment rather than from one visit. Your schedule may depend on the treatment you had, the appearance of the lining and the laboratory result from any sample. Surveillance does not itself treat reflux or remove abnormal tissue; it helps the team decide what care is appropriate.

Take medicines exactly as prescribed and attend the endoscopy or clinic appointments arranged for you. Follow preparation instructions carefully, including any fasting or medicine changes.
