How long does polyp removal take to work for bowel polyps?

During a colonoscopy or another endoscopic procedure, the clinician removes a polyp with a snare or another instrument. The procedure itself may be brief for a small, accessible polyp, but the overall visit includes bowel preparation, sedation or monitoring, and recovery. A larger, numerous or difficult-to-reach polyp can require a different approach or another appointment.

Removed tissue is sent for laboratory examination. The report can describe the polyp type, whether it was fully removed and whether further surveillance is needed. Removal lowers the immediate concern from that polyp, but it does not mean every future polyp has been prevented.

Follow the discharge instructions about eating, drinking, driving, medicines and activity, especially if sedation was used. Mild bloating or cramping can occur after the examination. Keep the appointment or contact method for your laboratory result, and ask when bowel follow-up is due. Do not restart or stop medicines such as blood thinners unless the treating team gives you a plan.

If a sample was taken, keep the result discussion even when you feel recovered. The report determines whether routine monitoring or additional assessment is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical advice for heavy or persistent rectal bleeding, black stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, fever, fainting or repeated vomiting after the procedure. These may signal a complication and need prompt assessment. A small amount of blood can occur after removal, but your discharge instructions should define what your service considers expected.

Ask how many polyps were removed, whether any area needs another procedure, when the laboratory report will be ready, which medicines to resume, and when your next bowel examination should take place.
