How long does pneumococcal vaccination take to work for pneumonia?

The vaccine prepares immune memory against selected pneumococcal bacteria. It cannot prevent every type of pneumonia, because pneumonia can be caused by viruses, other bacteria or non-infectious problems. Protection is not an instant shield on the day of the injection. Your clinician can explain the product used, whether another dose is advised, and how your age, medical history or immune system affects the plan.

Keep the vaccination appointment and tell the vaccinator about previous vaccine reactions, current illness and medicines that affect immunity. Continue practical infection precautions, including hand hygiene and avoiding close contact with people who are unwell. If you develop cough, fever, chest pain or breathlessness after vaccination, do not assume the injection has caused or prevented pneumonia; arrange an assessment based on the symptoms.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, chest pain that is severe or worsening, or difficulty staying awake. Contact a clinician promptly for fever with a worsening cough, fast breathing, or reduced ability to drink. Vaccination is preventive care, so suspected pneumonia still needs clinical assessment and may require treatment even if you have recently been vaccinated.
