How long does physiotherapy take to work for shoulder dislocation?

Short answer

Physiotherapy may improve shoulder movement and confidence over several weeks, while strength and return to demanding activity can take several months.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What recovery involves

After the joint is put back in place, the shoulder may be sore, guarded or weak. Early sessions usually protect healing tissues and restore comfortable movement. Later work targets the rotator cuff and shoulder-blade muscles so the joint is better supported during reaching and lifting.

The time frame is shaped by whether the dislocation damaged nearby tissue, whether it has happened before, your age and activity goals, and how consistently exercises are completed. Progress is measured by pain, range, strength and control rather than by a calendar date.

How to support progress

Follow the movement limits given after reduction or surgery, attend reassessments, and practise the home programme at the prescribed level. Avoid testing the shoulder with sudden overhead or behind-the-neck movements before control has returned. Tell your physiotherapist if an exercise causes sharp pain, slipping or increasing soreness that lasts into the next day.

A physiotherapist can adjust repetitions, resistance and work or sport drills as the shoulder becomes steadier. Read more about [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/).

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help if the shoulder looks out of place again, or if you develop severe pain, new numbness, marked weakness, a cold or pale hand, or an inability to move the arm after an injury. Contact your treating clinician if progress stops, the shoulder repeatedly feels as though it will slip, or pain is worsening instead of settling.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which movements must be protected, what milestone should come before strengthening, and when driving, work, lifting or sport can be reintroduced. Also ask whether the injury pattern makes recurrence more concerning and how it will be monitored.

Questions people ask

Will physiotherapy prevent another shoulder dislocation?

It can improve muscle strength and joint control, which may reduce instability, but protection and activity decisions depend on the injury and examination.

What if the shoulder still feels weak?

Weakness can persist while strength is rebuilding. Report ongoing weakness or slipping so the programme and diagnosis can be reviewed.
