How long does oral rehydration therapy take to work for food poisoning?

Food poisoning can cause repeated vomiting or watery diarrhoea, so the body may lose fluid almost as quickly as it receives it. Oral rehydration solution supports hydration but does not directly remove the infection or toxin causing the illness. Less thirst, a moister mouth, improved energy, and lighter urine suggest progress. Nausea may make drinking difficult even when the body needs fluid.

Prepare the sachet with the stated amount of safe water and use it as directed. Sip slowly and often rather than drinking a large volume at once. After vomiting, wait a short while before restarting with tiny sips. Continue regular fluids and eat light foods when you can tolerate them. Avoid alcohol and very sugary drinks, which may aggravate diarrhoea. Wash hands carefully to reduce spread to others.

Arrange urgent assessment for confusion, fainting, severe drowsiness, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, repeated vomiting that prevents drinking, or signs of serious dehydration such as very little urine. Seek advice sooner for a baby, older adult, pregnancy, or a long-term condition. Medical review is also needed when symptoms are worsening or hydration is not improving after several hours.
