How long does oophorectomy take to work for a BRCA gene mutation?

A BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation can increase inherited cancer risk. Removing the ovaries reduces the ovarian tissue at risk, but it does not remove every possible source of cancer risk and is not treatment for an established cancer unless planned for that purpose. If the fallopian tubes are also removed, the operation is often discussed as risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy. Removing ovaries before natural menopause can cause hot flushes, vaginal dryness, sleep changes and fertility loss.

Before surgery, discuss fertility preservation, whether the fallopian tubes and uterus will be removed, and a plan for menopausal symptoms. Afterward, follow wound, movement and medication instructions and attend follow-up. Ask whether hormone therapy is suitable for your personal cancer history and whether breast, abdominal or other screening remains part of your care.

Contact the surgical team promptly for fever, worsening abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, wound separation, persistent vomiting or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help for fainting, severe breathlessness, chest pain or sudden one-sided leg swelling. Do not start hormones or supplements without discussing them with the care team.
