How long does nebuliser treatment take to work for asthma?

The device delivers a bronchodilator mist into the airways, where it can relax airway muscles and improve airflow. The change may be noticed while treatment is being given or soon afterwards. A nebuliser does not remove the underlying airway inflammation, so improvement does not mean the asthma episode is fully over.

In urgent care, clinicians may combine nebulised treatment with oxygen, steroids or other measures according to your breathing and response. The device and medicine should be selected by a professional rather than borrowed or improvised.

Sit upright, follow the breathing instructions and complete the prescribed treatment. If you have an asthma action plan, use it. Arrange follow-up after an episode so the clinician can review triggers, inhaler technique and preventer treatment.

A temporary tremor, headache or fast heartbeat can occur with bronchodilators. Report severe or persistent effects, and do not delay help because the nebuliser makes you feel briefly better.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, inability to speak in full sentences, blue or grey lips, exhaustion, confusion or poor response to reliever treatment. Urgent review is also needed when symptoms return quickly or worsen despite following your plan.
