How long does an MRI scan take to work for raised PSA?

A raised PSA is a blood-test finding with several possible explanations, including non-cancerous prostate conditions. MRI makes detailed images of the prostate and nearby tissues. The images can help a clinician judge whether an area looks suspicious and whether a biopsy or another step should be considered; MRI alone does not confirm or exclude every cause of a raised PSA.

The appointment may include safety screening, preparation, positioning and sometimes an injection of contrast. Your centre will explain whether you need to follow bladder or bowel preparation instructions.

Tell the radiology team about metal implants, kidney disease, allergies, claustrophobia and medicines. Follow instructions about food, drink and preparation. Keep the follow-up appointment where the MRI findings, PSA pattern, examination and medical history can be considered together. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless your clinician tells you to.

Seek urgent medical help for inability to pass urine, severe lower abdominal pain, heavy blood in the urine, fever with urinary symptoms or sudden serious illness. These symptoms need assessment regardless of when the MRI report is due. Contact your clinic if you cannot attend the scan or are unsure how to prepare.

Ask why MRI is recommended, whether contrast is needed, how the result will be combined with your PSA and examination, when you will receive the report and what the possible next steps are.
