How long does an MRI scan take to work for Li-Fraumeni syndrome?

MRI uses magnets and radio waves to make detailed pictures of soft tissues. In people with Li-Fraumeni syndrome, imaging may be arranged as part of a specialist surveillance plan. The scan itself does not make a tumour disappear or change the inherited syndrome; it helps clinicians look for findings that may need closer assessment.

Time in the department can be longer than time inside the scanner. Check-in, changing clothes, safety questions, positioning, contrast preparation and recovery after contrast can all add time. Some scans use contrast, while others do not.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about eating, drinking and medicines. Tell the team about metal fragments, implanted devices, kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and difficulty lying still. Remove metal objects before the scan and use the call button if you feel distressed. Ask when and how the report will be shared with your genetics or oncology team.

Contact the imaging centre or your clinical team promptly if you develop a new severe symptom, or if a planned surveillance scan cannot be completed. After contrast, seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling or fainting. A scan appointment is not a substitute for urgent assessment of sudden or worsening symptoms.

Ask which body areas the MRI will examine, whether contrast is planned, what the scan is checking, when results will be reviewed and what happens if the images show an area needing further tests.
