How long does Mohs surgery take to work for squamous cell carcinoma?

Mohs surgery removes the visible tumour with a small margin, then maps and examines the tissue edges. If cancer cells are seen at an edge, the surgeon removes another targeted layer from that location. This tissue-checking cycle continues until the examined margins are clear. The number of cycles and the repair method vary with the tumour's size, depth, location, and pattern.

Clear margins describe the tissue examined during surgery; they do not mean the skin will look normal immediately. Soreness, swelling, bruising, crusting, and a scar are common parts of repair. The scar can soften and change colour gradually, so early appearance is not the final result.

Use the dressing and wound-care plan supplied by your surgical team. Protect the site from knocks, avoid activity that strains the repair, and use recommended pain relief. Attend the planned wound review and stitch removal. After closure, ask when moisturising, scar care, and sun protection can begin.

Keep a record of any new or changing skin areas and arrange ongoing examinations as advised. Squamous cell carcinoma can recur or occur at another site, so a healed wound still deserves attention during future checks.

Call the surgical team if pressure does not stop bleeding, the wound separates, pain becomes more intense, or redness spreads beyond the wound. Increasing warmth, pus-like fluid, fever, or sudden swelling may signal a problem requiring assessment. Obtain urgent help for severe bleeding, faintness, or breathing difficulty.

Ask how many layers were needed, how the wound will be closed, when the pathology findings are considered complete, and which movements or sports to avoid. Discuss scar expectations, follow-up skin checks, and which symptoms should prompt a same-day call.
