How long does mammogram take to work for breast cancer?

During mammography, each breast is positioned and briefly compressed while X-ray images are made. Compression can feel uncomfortable, but it is brief. A radiologist reviews the images for findings such as a mass, distortion, or a cluster of calcifications.

An image finding is not the same as a cancer diagnosis. You may be asked to return for additional views, an ultrasound, or a biopsy so the team can identify what a finding represents. A clear screening result also does not replace attention to a new breast change.

Tell the imaging team about breast symptoms, pregnancy possibility, implants, and previous breast procedures. Wear a two-piece outfit and avoid deodorant or powder on the breast or underarm area if your centre advises this. Keep follow-up appointments and bring earlier images when requested, because comparison can help interpretation.

Do not wait for a routine mammogram if you notice a new lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin pulling, nipple inversion, or a persistent change in breast shape. Arrange clinical assessment, and seek urgent help for severe symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing.

Ask whether this is screening or diagnostic imaging, when to expect the report, and what happens if extra views are needed. Ask how your symptoms will be assessed if the images do not explain them.
