How long does liver resection take to work for liver cancer?

During a liver resection, the surgeon removes the part of the liver containing the planned tumour while preserving enough functioning liver. The cancer-containing tissue is addressed during the operation, but the meaning of the result is confirmed through laboratory examination and later reviews.

The remaining liver can adapt as you recover, although tiredness and digestive changes may continue for a while. Your care team considers the tumour type, liver function, surgical findings and imaging when deciding whether observation or additional treatment is appropriate.

Take prescribed medicines, follow wound and diet instructions, and walk gently as recommended. Keep a record of pain, appetite, bowel changes and temperature. Attend blood tests and imaging even if you feel well, because recovery symptoms do not show whether cancer remains.

Ask before lifting, driving, drinking alcohol or returning to strenuous work. Tell the team about liver disease, regular medicines and any herbal products, since these can affect surgical recovery or liver function.

Get prompt advice for a high temperature, worsening pain, repeated vomiting, increasing abdominal swelling, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual sleepiness, faintness, breathlessness or a wound that becomes red or leaks fluid.
