How long does joint fusion surgery take to work for hand osteoarthritis?

Fusion stabilises a painful finger joint by joining its bones in a useful position. The operation can temporarily increase soreness, swelling, and stiffness in nearby joints. A splint or dressing protects the repair while bone healing develops, and the operated joint will no longer provide its former movement. Hand therapy may work on swelling control, safe motion in unfused joints, grip adaptations, and everyday tasks. Improvement is judged by pain and function, not by bending at the fused joint.

Elevate the hand when instructed and keep the dressing or splint clean and dry. Avoid gripping, lifting, or leaning through the hand until cleared. Move the fingers and joints that the therapist allows, because protecting one joint should not unnecessarily stiffen the rest of the hand. Use prescribed pain relief and attend wound, imaging, and therapy appointments. Ask how to modify typing, cooking, dressing, and other tasks during healing.

Contact the surgical team for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, wound separation, or pain that escalates instead of settling.
