How long does joint fusion surgery take to work for ankle osteoarthritis?

Short answer
Ankle fusion does not work all at once; pain often eases gradually as swelling settles and the fused bones heal.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why recovery takes time
Fusion joins the damaged ankle surfaces so the painful motion is reduced. Early discomfort comes from the operation and swelling, and the ankle is commonly protected in a splint, cast, or boot while the bone union develops. Walking restrictions vary, so early improvement does not mean the joint is ready for full loading. Strength, balance, and confidence can continue to improve with rehabilitation after protection is reduced. The ankle may feel stiffer, but nearby joints help provide movement for walking.
Supporting healing
Follow the surgeon’s instructions about elevation, wound care, weight-bearing, and boot or cast use. Use crutches or another aid until cleared, and keep dressings dry as instructed. Gentle exercises for permitted areas can limit stiffness, while physiotherapy later helps gait and strength. Avoid smoking or nicotine if your surgical team advises stopping, because bone healing may be affected. Attend imaging and review appointments before changing activity.
Warning signs after surgery
Contact the surgical team urgently for increasing calf pain or swelling, new breathlessness, chest pain, a cold or unusually numb foot, or toes that change colour. Also report fever, spreading redness, pus, wound opening, or pain that suddenly becomes much worse. A fall or accidental weight on the ankle should be discussed even if the incision looks unchanged.
Useful questions
Ask when partial and full weight-bearing may begin, what imaging will confirm union, and which pain changes are expected. Discuss work, driving, footwear, physiotherapy goals, and how existing ankle osteoarthritis or neighbouring-joint symptoms may affect the plan.

Questions people ask
Will ankle fusion restore normal ankle movement?
No. It deliberately limits movement at the fused joint, while the foot and nearby joints support walking.
Why can pain continue after ankle fusion?
Surgical soreness and swelling can last during healing, and other foot or ankle joints may also contribute to symptoms.
