How long does joint aspiration take to work for a ganglion cyst?

A ganglion cyst contains thick, jelly-like fluid beside a joint or tendon. Aspiration removes some of that fluid through a needle, so a visible lump or tight feeling may improve during or soon after the procedure. The needle does not necessarily remove the cyst wall or its connection to the joint, which helps explain why the swelling can return. Pain may also come from irritation of nearby tissue rather than pressure alone, so improvement is not always immediate or complete.

Follow the dressing and activity advice from the clinician who performed the aspiration. Keep the puncture site clean, avoid pressing or repeatedly checking the area, and ease back into wrist or hand loading as comfort allows. Notice whether the lump, movement, and tenderness change over the next few days. Do not try to drain a cyst at home. If it returns, a clinician can discuss observation, repeat treatment, or another option based on its location and symptoms.

Contact the treating clinic if redness, warmth, drainage, increasing swelling, or worsening pain develops around the needle site. Seek urgent medical assessment for fever with a rapidly worsening area, severe pain, new weakness, or numbness in the hand. A lump that becomes hard, changes quickly, or causes persistent loss of movement also needs reassessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
