How long does imiquimod treatment take to work for warts?

Unlike a procedure that removes a wart at one visit, imiquimod supports an immune reaction in the treated skin. Redness, itching, scaling, crusting, or tenderness may develop before the wart becomes smaller. A strong reaction is not a dependable measure of clearance, and a mild reaction does not automatically mean the treatment has failed.

Imiquimod is not suitable for every type or location of wart. A clinician may need to confirm the diagnosis and decide whether another method is more appropriate, especially for lesions on the face, near nails, or in sensitive areas.

Follow the application days and amount given to you. Apply to clean, dry skin, wash your hands, and keep the product away from eyes and mucous membranes. Do not pick at the wart or cover it with an unapproved dressing. Protect the area from friction and sun when relevant.

Write down each application and any changes. If irritation becomes difficult to manage, ask the prescriber whether a supervised pause or a different skin-care routine is appropriate. Do not compensate for a missed application by applying extra product.

Contact a clinician if the area develops severe pain, spreading warmth and redness, pus, extensive blistering, or bleeding that does not settle. Arrange a review for a wart that enlarges, changes colour, becomes hard, or remains after the planned treatment, because unusual growths need a proper diagnosis.

Ask whether imiquimod fits the wart's type and location, how to apply it, how long it should remain on the skin, and what improvement should look like. Confirm the review date and discuss alternatives if the lesion does not respond or the surrounding skin becomes too inflamed.
