How long does a growth scan take to work for placenta praevia?

The sonographer measures your baby’s growth and checks fluid, movement and heartbeat. The scan also reviews where the placenta lies in relation to the cervix. A transvaginal ultrasound may be suggested when a clearer view of the placental edge is needed; your clinician will explain this before proceeding.

A low-lying placenta may move farther from the cervix as the uterus grows, but the scan is an assessment rather than a treatment. The report helps your maternity team plan repeat imaging and discuss birth arrangements if the placenta remains close to or over the cervix.

Follow the preparation instructions from your imaging unit and tell the team about any bleeding, pain or previous scan concerns. Ask how close the placenta is to the cervix, whether the baby’s growth is on track, whether another scan is needed, and what activities or symptoms should prompt a call.

With placenta praevia, contact your maternity unit urgently for any vaginal bleeding, contractions, or abdominal pain, even if the bleeding is light or settles. Do not wait for the next scan, and follow your unit’s instructions about whether to attend hospital or call an emergency service.
