How long does a GP consultation take to work for shingles?

The clinician may recognise shingles from a one-sided painful rash with fluid-filled blisters and may consider your age, health, and symptom timing when choosing treatment. Antiviral medicine may be recommended for some people, particularly when assessment is prompt. Pain can remain after the blisters begin to dry, and the skin may stay sensitive. A consultation therefore starts a care plan; it is not a treatment that works on its own.

Take or apply treatments exactly as directed. Keep the rash clean and dry, wear loose clothing, and avoid scratching or deliberately breaking blisters. Cover the affected area when practical and wash your hands after touching it. Avoid close contact with people who have not had chickenpox or vaccination, pregnant people, newborns, and anyone with reduced immunity while blisters are open. Arrange prompt medical assessment for a new blistering rash, especially if it is painful or on the face. Seek urgent care if the rash is near an eye, vision changes, there is severe headache or confusion, weakness, or extensive illness. Contact the clinician if pain is difficult to control, the rash becomes increasingly red or drains pus, or symptoms are worsening.

Ask whether the rash is shingles, whether antiviral treatment is suitable, how to manage pain, and how to protect vulnerable contacts. Ask what changes around the eye, ear, or face should trigger urgent review.
