How long does a GP consultation take to work for an inguinal hernia?

The GP may ask when the groin swelling or discomfort began, whether it changes with standing or straining, and whether it settles when you lie down. An examination can help identify a groin hernia and check whether it appears reducible. A consultation may therefore clarify the next step quickly, while a surgical opinion or operation, if needed, takes place separately.

Some hernias are monitored when symptoms are mild. Persistent pain, enlargement, or difficulty with daily activities may lead to referral for assessment by a surgical team.

Arrange a GP appointment and describe the swelling, pain, triggers, and any change in size. Avoid activities that clearly worsen discomfort, and use safe lifting technique. Do not force a painful lump back into place. Keep a note of bowel or bladder changes and take a list of medicines to the appointment.

Seek urgent medical help if the lump becomes suddenly very painful, firm, discoloured, or cannot be gently reduced, especially with vomiting, marked abdominal pain, or inability to pass stool or gas. These changes can indicate trapped tissue and need prompt assessment.
